The Silence of the Lambs

I thought  The Silence of the Lambs had an amazing plot. The way that Crawford sends Agent Starling to get information from Hannibal Lecter without telling her the actual reason was a genius move. All the little tips and ideas that Hannibal gives are great, they add just enough to the investigation without actually solving it. I like how the plot makes you feel about the characters. I’m gonna talk about the ending because you’ve already seen this. Normally, you’d want a psychopath to be locked up for good, but the way the story is portrayed you actually feel a little sorry for Lectar. He’s basically abused during his time in the mental institution by Dr. Chilton. You aren’t even upset when he’s free in the end because Dr. Chilton is finally going to get what he deserves. There are also some scenes that show social issues like the sexualization of women. Agent Starling is repeatedly sexualized throughout the movie like at 8:30 when Dr. Chilton hits in her while she’s doing her job and at 21:16 when the runners look back at her while she passes. This continues through the movie and I think it points towards the intelligence of the writer.

The film was made to perfection. To start with, the acting was amazing, especially Dr. Lecter. The actor did an amazing job playing the intelligent psychopath Lecter, it made it seem like that was who he truly was. The close up facial shots like at 13:25 help with the eerie way in which Lecter is portrayed. There are a lot of other shots that are really well done. For instance, the shots from Buffalo Bill’s perspective while he’s wearing the night vision goggles are really well done. It looks as if I’m the one looking through them. The shot at 49:30 where it’s a single long shot of Buffalo Bill’s is really well done, the movement looks as if you’re walking through the house and it has a really eerie feel to it. The flashbacks are portrayed really well and I think they add a lot to the plot, especially in what Lecter does when he talks about Starling’s past. The sound is really well done throughout the film. One of the beginning scenes as Starling approaches an office space is great where the sound slowly increases from whispers as she approaches and then quiets back down as she passes. The music is also really good through the movie, it adds the perfect feelings to the scenes. I liked some of the little choices that were made such as rolling some of the credits during the opening scenes.

I would definitely recommend this film to other people. It’s not for people to young because of the story line and some of the things that are said, but if you can pick up on some of the references and can handle the graphics then I think this is a great movie. The plot is amazing and it is a truly suspenseful and exciting movie that I think is a must see. This is a movie that I really enjoyed and was excited to come to class to see.
