Midterm Week
Scene Critique 2
My second critique is on the bar fight scene early in the movie
Kingsman: The Secret Service. This critique continues to be like my
first, being my favorite kind of movie: action and comedy. The main
importance of this scene is that the main character, Eggsy, meets
Harry who will take him under his wing and help him develop from
a snobbish kind into a well respectable man. He met Harry a few
scenes earlier, but this is the on where he find out that Harry isn't
a rich snob, he's something completely different that Eggsy can look
up to.
The most noticeable part of the scene other than the violence that's going on, is the background music that fits the fighting perfectly. The trumpet sounds in the music change pitch when the cinematography does some thing like switching to slow motion or when you see a devastating blow. The cuts are really well put together even though the rule of 180 is broken multiple times. The mix of cuts from close ups to wide shots captures the action really well.
The acting is also really good. The flips and reactions that some of the people take is completely unrealistic, but performed to perfection even like a slapstick comedy at some points. an example of this is when the main bad guy gets shot with a stun device and does a complete backflip. The scene provides the viewer with a sense of connection to the main characters as they get a triumph over the bad guys that most people love. These bad guys aren't the main plot of the movie, they just provide a backstory about the majority of Eggsy's life. The scene is also important because it foreshadows the last scene in the movie where Eggsy becomes the man that Harry is in the end and is the one flinging the beer glass and beating everyone up. The two scenes together show the character development that occurs throughout the movie.
